Size of the lunulae and indeed their presence or absence are variable matters presumably under genetic control, although no systemic investigation of the genetics has been performed. The lunulae are usually largest on the thumbnail and if present at all are most likely to be found on the thumb. Azure lunulae occur in Wilson disease (277900).
